“Zvaces se Varvara” - the series set to shake up the region

The series “Zvaces se Varvara” premiered on the Superstar channel on January 10 and airs every weekend. In a short time, it has captured the attention of viewers across Serbia and the wider region.

Intense, striking, and deeply emotional-melancholic yet powerful, dramatic and melodramatic, always honest and full of unexpected twists-this series reveals what life looks like today, in the modern world.

Without a traditional main hero, and with Varvara as first among equals, the series follows the destinies of several characters over ten episodes, all driven by the same goal: the search for happiness. Guided by different ideas of what happiness means, they rush to seize it, to reach it-while some are merely running away from misfortune, which relentlessly chases them, ready to catch and embrace them.

Milena, a young woman who endured profound and nearly indescribable suffering in childhood, turns to God seeking salvation and comfort. She does not dare to ask for happiness. God agrees to help her, giving her the name Varvara so that no one can recognize or hurt her again. She is in love with Isidor, a criminal with a sensitive soul who returns her love. He is in prison, she is in a monastery. Despite everything, they love each other still-more than ever.

Director Dejan Zecevic says that the series rests on “four pillars-the four main characters” portrayed by Anita Ognjanovic (Varvara), Una Lucic, Katarina Markovic and Cubrilo Cupic. “We follow the destinies of characters who, in a very intriguing way, gradually move closer to one another and ultimately reach compelling resolutions. At their core, these are almost tragic fates. The characters yearn for happiness and continue searching for it.”

“I believe the audience will be met with something quite cathartic-something that may even shake them out of the comfort zone they usually have when they turn on and watch one of series. Very often, series-driven by the urge to binge-watch, have become a kind of sedative. I don’t think Varvara will be that. Varvara is not a sleeping aid.” he emphasized.
